Stories of Love:

Karl & Kelsey

The Perfect Sidekick

Karl (known as Jugs at PAWS) was adopted four years ago by a graduate student, Kelsey, and her roommates. He's travelled through several huge life stages with her in those few years, from graduating to getting married! Karl's mom is over-the-moon in love with him, because who wouldn't be! We caught up with Kelsey about how Karl's life has changed after his time at PAWS Atlanta.

1. Why did you decide to adopt Karl?

If Disney taught me anything, it's that everyone needs an animal sidekick. I decided to adopt a dog because I wanted the companionship of an animal. I grew up with dogs and love them, so I knew I wanted a dog. At the time, I was in grad school and living in an apartment with two other girls who were all on board with helping out with a dog. I included them when I picked out Karl.

2. How is Karl doing now?

Karl is doing great. We were told he came from a difficult situation, but you would never know based on his demeanor now. He's so happy and sweet. After grad school, I moved into a house in Decatur with my now husband. Karl now has his own backyard and a cat sister he loves. He frequently comes to work with me and enjoys tagging along wherever I go.

3. What was his personality like when you first adopted him, and what is his personality like now? How has Karl changed during his time with you?

Karl came to me very well trained already, but as we have lived life together, and gotten to know one another over the years, we have learned to communicate so well with one another. He shows me what he needs or wants very clearly, and I'm pretty sure he can read my mind as well! He always seems to know how I'm feeling or what I'm planning. Likewise, I often feel like I can tell exactly what he is thinking by looking at him, like I can see the wheels turning in his head. Our bond has grown so strong since I adopted him four years ago.

4. Do you have any other pets? What is Karl's relationship like with them?

We have a cat named Dinah, who belonged to my husband Remy before we got married. They're very funny with one another. He tries to get her to play with him by bringing her toys. She tries to play with him by stalking and "hunting" him around the house. She is definitely his alpha, even though he is four or five times her size. With all their antics, they get along very well. I like to imagine he thinks she is his best friend, but she thinks he's her pesky little brother.

5. What activities does Karl enjoy?

Karl loves a walk in the neighborhood to enjoy all the smells. He also loves playing with other dogs at the dog park. At home, he enjoys, naps, sunbathing in the backyard, and sleeping in late on the weekends in between mom and dad.

6. How does Karl show that he loves you?

More than food, Karl lives for snuggles. He gives hugs by pressing his face right into you and leaning in close. If you get on his level, he will also go in for a big kiss on the face! He also likes to greet me and my husband when we come home by bringing us a gift--usually a toy, sometimes a shoe, or whatever he can find.

7. What do you love most about Karl?

Last year, Karl ruptured a disc in his back and had to have back surgery, followed by physical therapy. It was a tough time, but he always had such a sweet, trusting spirit with us, the vets, and the vet techs through it all. A year later, he is as healthy and happy as ever and you would never know he had been hurt. He's just happy to be wherever I am and to be included. It makes him the perfect travel buddy, the perfect quarantine companion, and the perfect sidekick
