Jess and Lena's Story

Petco Love 2022 Grant Winner

Jessica’s grandmother was the first to notice it— at just 16 months old, she was only using the left side of her body and wanted to understand why. They soon learned it was Cerebral Palsy. With it impacting everything about how Jessica could move and function, it meant she would need to undergo physical therapy. She faced many challenges, including bouts with depression and a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, a condition that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain and sensitivity. She soon reached a breaking point, feeling like she couldn’t take it anymore.

One thing that remained consistent in her life, was her love for dogs. At a young age, she’d tagged along with her aunt who was a dog trainer, and it was during those training sessions that Jessica found joy. With her health challenges, it felt like a fantasy— until she met Lena.

When Jessica began volunteering at PAWS Atlanta, she didn’t think she’d be able to work with dogs due to her physical limitations. But the staff had other plans. Determined to support Jessica as much as possible, PAWS Atlanta helped Jessica connect with the dogs that needed her most. She’d sit with the pups battling anxiety, comforting them and bringing out their personalities. Jessica was thrilled to see their progress!

Then she met a pup named Lena, with a big smile, a big heart, and a wagging tail. Knowing all that Lena had been through before making it to the shelter, Jessica was inspired by her resilience and just knew she would be taking her home.

“She needed to be walked every day and got me out of bed to make sure that happened. My mind had to focus on her and her care, and I couldn’t just think of myself. She needed me! I couldn’t let my pain take over. She taught me how to trust again and to look at all the good in my life. That’s what makes her different from other dogs. I’m able to live on my own because of Lena,” shared Jessica.

Jessica volunteers four days a week at PAWS Atlanta and is currently studying to become a certified animal trainer, an accomplishment she’d never thought possible before Lena. “She gave me my life and my purpose, and I couldn’t love her more. She reminds me every day that there’s nothing better than supporting and lifting each other up.”
