Against All Odds

Thor's Story

When Thor (previously Blackberry Lemonade) was surrendered by his previous owners, our team was worried that he would become a long-term guest - not because of a behavioral issue but because of his appearance. Dogs with brindle coloring like Thor are commonly associated with pit bull type breeds, which leads potential adopters to make assumptions about them. On top of that, Thor's previous owners cropped his ears, which can also prompt misunderstandings about a dog's temperament. Despite these stereotypes, though, Thor is a sweet and loving pup. When his new mom came to meet him, we were elated that she could see straight past any misconceptions to the chill boy Thor really is. Recently, Thor's mom sent us some pictures of him loving his new life, and we couldn't resist sharing her update with you.

Why did you decide to adopt Thor?

I always wanted my own puppy, but because I lived in an apartment with pet restrictions, that wasn’t an option for me. However, I recently purchased a home, and, once I settled in, I knew that my very next purchase would be my fur baby. When deciding on where to look for a dog, adoption was the only choice for me. I wanted to give a pup who was abandoned a second chance at a luxurious life. After searching everywhere, I came across Thor’s picture and fell in love. I knew that his cropped ears didn’t mean he wasn't a sweet baby boy who deserved a loving home. When some people see Thor, they might judge him or think he’s aggressive, but he’s really just misunderstood, and I relate to that so much. His appearance can be perceived as mean but he’s actually the sweetest, and I’m the same way!

How is Thor doing now?

Thor is doing amazing! He has adjusted so well and is very sweet and obedient. Every day, his confidence is getting stronger. This is his third week home, and he’s finally comfortable enough to sleep in the bed with me! He’s adjusted well to our schedule, and coming home to him is the best part of my day. He's becoming more and more protective of me, in a good way that shows just how much love he has to share.

What kind of activities does Thor enjoy?

Thor’s favorite game is tug-of-war! He likes to fetch but he eventually wants to tug for his toy back, so most games turn into tug-of-war in the end. He also loves to practice with his training treats, which is wonderful.

How does Thor show his love?

Thor is absolutely a mommy’s boy. He's not usually a big cuddler but he shows affection by protecting me and our home. Any room I’m in, he’s there next to me to make sure I'm okay. If he’s laying a couple feet away, he’ll come over to me every hour or so to kiss me and then go lay back down. I can tell how appreciative he is to have been rescued. Really, though, he saved me.

What do you love most about your pet?

I love Thor’s temperament. He’s a really chill guy unless he senses anything is wrong. Then, he calms me and makes me feel safe. I’m so blessed to have hit the jackpot with such a good boy!
