Cary Grant Finds a Forever Home
Cary Grant came to PAWS Atlanta angry and in pain. His previous owner chose to declaw him, which causes a host of issues. Declawing amputates the ends of a cat’s toes and takes a long time to heal. Even after healing, there’s often infection and pain. Because of this, most cats who are declawed also have mood and behavioral issues. Aside from the pain that makes them upset, declawed cats feel defenseless and stressed. Claws are a cat’s main line of defense, and, when removed, cats feel threatened and tend to lash out. There is usually increased biting and hissing following declawing. Cary Grant’s previous owner noted these changes but didn’t know to attribute them to the declawing. This led to Cary being surrendered.
Cary Grant spent his first month or so at PAWS Atlanta isolated, on pain medication, and under close watch. Once he was feeling better, he was transferred to a room in our Cat Cottage. He didn’t particularly enjoy the change and felt defensive around other cats. He usually enjoyed attention from humans but was still often snappy. After a few months, though, Cary Grant was adopted. However, after a week, he was returned to PAWS Atlanta again. His new adopters didn’t fully understand what he had been through and needed a calmer cat that would feel less defensive around their kids. Finally, though, Cary Grant met Nick. Nick fell in love with Cary Grant immediately (and, who wouldn't? Look at how handsome he is!). He’s doing amazing in his new home! Nick shared a bit with us about Cary Grant’s new life.
Nick says, "Cary is such a wonderful, sweet, guy and it's been a perfect match. He didn't take long to come out of his shell after I took him home, he seemed to know he was in a good place and immediately turned into a cuddly, clingy, loveable cat. He follows me around the house while I work and never leaves my side, he is curious about everything and very sociable. To be honest, he acts more like a puppy than a cat, and I love it! It's clear he's happy to have a home. I haven't experienced any of the biting or aggressiveness that his previous owner reported. He is one of the sweetest, most affectionate cats I have ever met. I'm so grateful I found him."
